East of Bergamo

Lake Iseo and Franciacorta

Near Bergamo are Lake Iseo and Franciacorta , two extremely varied areas with a wealth of things to do and see. Franciacorta is famous for producing the first Italian Classic Method sparkling wine to be awarded DOCG status (in 1995) , using Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay grapes. These vines thrive in an ideal climate thanks to the breezy location south of the lake and Val Camonica, and the wines they produce are excellent. Beyond wine tasting, however, Franciacorta offers much more. I also recommend visiting the Sebino peat bogs, the Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa, and the Olivetan Abbey of San Nicola . Lake Iseo is a true gem! A body of water nestled between mountains, with Monte Isola in the middle. The towns overlooking the lake are equally enchanting, such as Lovere, Sale Marasino , and Iseo itself .

Lake Garda

Near Bergamo lies Lake Garda , just an hour away. Italy's largest lake offers countless things to see and do. The most famous is undoubtedly Sirmione , the pearl of Garda, a beloved holiday destination since Roman times. Evidence of this era is the Grotto of Catullus , which is actually an ancient Roman residence. Also worth seeing are the Scaliger Castle, where you can climb the towers for a beautiful view, and the thermal baths. On the shore closest to Bergamo, it's worth taking a trip to the Vittoriale degli Italiani , a complex of buildings, streets, squares, an open-air theater, gardens, and waterways erected starting in 1921 by Gabriele d'Annunzio . Not far away is Salò , the beautiful village of Gardone Riviera , and Isola del Garda , the largest island on the lake, owned by the Borghese Cavazza family, who live permanently in the villa ( tourist visits are allowed from mid-April to mid-October ). Vittoriale degli Italiani : Located in Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda, this complex comprises various buildings, an open-air theater, gardens, and waterways. It dates back to 1921, and was home to Gabriele d'Annunzio for a time. The immense villa, now considered a veritable museum, is located in a panoramic position just a few kilometers from the lake and the town of Salò. After taking the time to explore the building, you can also visit the small village of Gardone Riviera or nearby Salò.

Brescia

Known as the lioness of Italy , it's a beautiful, compact city that's easily explored in a day. Besides being easily accessible, it offers a rich and noteworthy cultural heritage. Start in Piazza del Foro, with the ancient Capitolium , the Roman temple dating back to 73 AD, and from there move on to the nearby Santa Giulia Museum , which hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions. Another highlight of the city is the historic center, with the impressive Piazza della Loggia , home to the beautiful Palazzo della Loggia, and Piazza Paolo VI, home to the Duomo Vecchio and Duomo Nuovo . A short stroll will take you to the ancient castle overlooking Brescia, where you can enjoy a delicious coffee or an aperitif. Finally, car and motor enthusiasts shouldn't miss the fascinating Millemiglia Museum, divided into nine sections.
